Whiteladies Rd or Regent St, Clifton

Bosco is the one shortlist venue that fails the brief's "not a chain" test outright, and it is worth saying so plainly rather than dressing it up: founder Miles Johnson opened the original Whiteladies Road site in 2014, and the group has since grown to two Bristol sites (Whiteladies Road and a reopened Clifton Village sibling), plus Bath, Cheltenham, and a Cardiff opening in late 2025 -- five Bosco-branded restaurants under one London-registered company, plus a separate Pizzucci pizza-bar spin-off on Gloucester Road. This is a small, real restaurant group, not a founder-owned single site.
What it does offer, honestly, is the opposite of most other names on this list: certainty. The Regent Street location trades every day of the week, noon to 10pm, with no early-week closure to work around, and already has a ready-made group menu at £32pp -- a restaurant set up to say yes to a booking of 10 rather than one that needs persuading. Reviews describe a "busy, buzzy" wood-fired Neapolitan pizzeria, generous portions for the price (pizzas £9-13), and a room that stays full even mid-week, which cuts both ways: reliable, but not obviously short of covers.
Online booking caps at a party of 6, with larger groups needing a direct phone call -- a small extra step, not a blocker. If the chain concern is a hard no for this list, Bosco is an easy pass; if operational certainty matters more than single-site purity for an early dinner, it is a genuinely low-risk fallback.
