Smokebox is owner Alan James-Haile's cosy smokehouse and bar on Wells Road in Totterdown, built around a sharing-platter, low-and-slow barbecue format -- brisket, pork belly, halloumi, smoked chicken wings -- that Alan himself describes as designed to feel like "sitting around a campfire with your family." The Bristol Sauce's independent review backs that framing directly: a Saturday afternoon visit found "every table almost full, conversation flowing," genuinely busy rather than performing for a review, with warm, attentive service and a strong showing from the brisket and honey-glazed halloumi in particular (the reviewer's one real critique was the loaded bun needing more sauce and texture). At the cheapest price point found across this entire 41-venue research project (£10-20pp per the existing `fact` field), Smokebox is a genuine budget-friendly outlier.
The clear structural weakness against this series' brief is trading pattern: Smokebox's own site confirms it is closed both Monday and Tuesday without exception, opening Wednesday through Sunday instead (main menu 12-9pm, Sunday to 7pm, with a breakfast service and bar hours either side). That is a direct, complete miss of both this series' target early-week nights -- worth stating plainly rather than treating the venue's low price point as compensation for its unavailability on the nights that matter.
One new fact beyond the existing research: the same team behind Smokebox has since opened a second site, Fire Pit, in Montpelier, serving a similar meat-forward menu under Bristol24/7's own reporting -- still a small, founder-led operation rather than a corporate chain, but no longer strictly single-site either, worth noting for completeness. Totterdown's Wells Road strip places Smokebox a short walk from both BANK and Truffled of Totterdown, all three candidates in this same small stretch of steep, independent-led food-and-drink frontage.
